2011 Fantasy Football: First Quarter Review-Quarterbacks

Aaron Rodgers leads all quarterbacks in points. Will he still wear the belt at season's end?

At the four game mark, I’ve been taking a look at the top performers. I looked at wide receivers and running backs already this week. To finish the series, here are a few quick notes on the quarterbacks that have so been the best for your fantasy football team.

Aaron Rodgers—Green Bay Packers—134 pts

Tom Brady—New England Patriots—128 pts

Drew Brees—New Orleans Saints—111 pts

These three are putting up big numbers, exactly what their owners expected when they drafted them. They make up the top three in points currently. It would be surprising if all three were not in the top five at the end of the season. Verdict: Neutral

Cam Newton—Carolina Panthers—109 pts

Not many people are taking Newton’s numbers seriously and there is a good reason for that: they aren’t likely to continue. A good amount of the rookie’s fantasy points have come at the tail end of games in which his team was already out of it. You do not want to stake your fantasy team’s chances on a quarterback who mostly succeeds against defenses that have turned off the juice. Verdict: Sell.

Matt Stafford—Detroit Lions—105 pts

Although Stafford isn’t likely to improve his numbers, he will likely continue to produce and many doubt that he will. He isn’t being talked of as a top-five quarterback and at season’s end, he may just be there. He has great weapons and he should be in many games that require him the throw. Verdict: Buy. He still has two games against Green Bay, who is fond of covering receivers with empty space.

Ryan Fitzpatrick—Buffalo Bills—88 pts

I talked more about Fitzpatrick a bit here. Verdict: Buy at this level of production. Sell at this rank order. Fitzpatrick will lose more games in the future, allowing him to maintain his fantasy production even with a lesser quality of work.

Eli Manning—New York Giants—87 points

Eli can’t catch a break. Badmouthed till the cows came home after a poor early showing, here he is again, ranked seventh in fantasy points after a number of years in which has come in somewhere from 7th to 10th. Verdict: Technically neutral, but some might forget just what dependable old Eli can do for your team.

Matt Hasselbeck—Tennessee Titans—83 pts

If there is one qb whose early success is not likely to continue, it’s Hasselbeck. He’s already lost his best target for the season in Woo Woo Kenny Britt. He has a running back that is itching to get the ball more. And he is old, seemingly about to be injured at any time. Verdict: Sell

Michael Vick—Philadelphia Eagles—80 pts

As always, the question with Vick is health. He has come out of two games, both of which resulted in disappointed owners. In the two games that he finished he delighted them. This is the way of the things with Vick 2.0. Verdict: Neutral

Tony Romo—Dallas Cowboys—77 pts

The current state of Romo is a fantasy owners dream. Castigated for every mistake while success are swept under the rug. The media goes out of its way to make it seem like Romo is playing poorly. He has the best one-two punch of receivers in the league who are about to be healthy. He put up top-ten numbers despite missing time. He has nowhere to go but up. Verdict: Buy, buy, buy.
