It will not be easy for Justin Blackmon in Jacksonville. Fantasy owners beware.
Justin Blackmon may end up being a star in the National Football League. But I’d lay odds that someone overpays for him in your free fantasy football league. Blackmon has talent, but consider this: Calvin Johnson put up 756 yards in his rookie campaign. Andre Johnson caught just four touchdowns in his first season. We have seen freshman wideouts put up good numbers recently, but Julio Jones and his ilk began careers on offenses that were already capable of moving the ball. The transition to the pros is tough for even the best receivers. (more…)

As I’ve said before, when prognosticating the fortunes of rookies in free fantasy football, the NFL draft is an inexact science and a young player’s situation is often more predictive than our view of his natural talents. Recognizing that distinction, it become clear which of 2012’s highly touted draft picks is the superior option for weekly fantasy football. Robert Griffin III. Andrew Luck may end up with the better career, but in 2012, RG3000 is likely to put up better numbers. (more…)

It’s tough to project how well college stars will perform in the NFL. Extremely tough. If it was easy, guys like David Carr and Tim Couch wouldn’t have been selected with the first overall pick of the real NFL draft. When drafting rookies, fantasy owners need to be wary about putting too much stock in their own analysis of the player’s ability. When drafting a free fantasy football team, concentrate on examining what you do know: the situation the player is entering. (more…)

Sean Payton will spend the season on the sideline. Your season will go on.
There is no doubt that Sean Payton is one of the best offensive minds in the National Football League. His suspension for the 2012 season could easily derail the Saints hopes for a championship and might keep them out of the playoffs. But in free fantasy football? I struggle to find ways in which the news will disrupt my drafting plans. (more…)

Which Brandon Lloyd will show up in New England?
On face value, the move to New England would seem to greatly increase the fantasy value of Brandon Lloyd. After all, he will now be catching the accurate passes of Tom Brady. His fans will point to the numbers he put up in 2010 with Kyle Orton under center and extrapolate to how Tom Brady will reinvigorate his career. Caution should be advised, however, if you are considering drafting Lloyd for your free fantasy football team. The exact same words were said about Chad Ochocinco last September. (more…)
