Believe it or not, the NFL season has hit its midpoint, and the action up to this point has been as exciting as ever. In fact, more than in most years, the NFL is experiencing a number of surprise performances and a level of overall parody that is almost unprecedented. This is not simply another year in which the Colts and Patriots are dominating, or one in which traditional bottom-dwellers are staying at the bottom of the standings. If you have not been paying close attention this year, you will certainly want to head to DirectStarTV.com to make sure that you will have access to all of the second half of the season’s games on TV. In the meantime, here is a brief rundown of where the divisions stand at the halfway point.
o NFC EAST – One of the strongest divisions in football judging by preseason rankings has underperformed to some extent, as Dallas got off to another disappointing (4-4) start, and the Eagles, thought to be a “Dream Team,” struggled out of the gate. The Giants, at 6-2, look to be strong playoff contenders, however, and the Eagles seem to be righting the ship slowly but surely, and at 3-5 aren’t out of the picture just yet.
o The NFC North race looks to be about over, as the Packers are the last undefeated team in the league at 8-0. However, Detroit isn’t out of the race, and at 6-2 could pose a threat should the Packers falter. In fact, the Bears, at 5-3, have come on strong lately as well, meaning that only the 2-6 Vikings appear completely out of the running.
o The NFC South remains undecided, with New Orleans holding a slim lead with a 6-3 record. Atlanta is 5-3, Tampa Bay 4-4, and the Panthers a deceptive 2-6 despite being right there in just about every game. The Saints look to be the best team here, but just about anyone, with a hot second half, could still take this division – in fact, even Carolina shouldn’t be counted out.
o The NFC West is about as done as any race could be at the midway point of a season. The 49ers are an impressive 7-1, with Seattle and Arizona tied for second place at 2-6, and St. Louis a miserable 1-7.
o The AFC East may be the closest race of any division, with New England, the Jets, and Buffalo all tied up at 5-3. Miami is out of it at 1-7, but any of the top 3 teams could still take home the title – with the Jets perhaps looking strongest heading into the second half.
o The AFC North also looks to be a three team race, with 6-2 Baltimore and Cincinnati leading, and 6-3 Pittsburgh close behind .With the Ravens having swept the Steelers already, however, they have to be favorites to prevail.
o The AFC South, due to the rapid decline of the Peyton Manning-less Colts, is less interesting than usual. However, at 6-3, the Texans look to be strong playoff contenders coming out of this division, with Tennessee hanging on in the race at 4-4.
o The AFC West is far from decided – Oakland has first place and a 5-4 record, but no one in the division is more than 2 games from .500 on either side of the mark, meaning that Kansas City, San Diego, and even, somehow, Denver, are still in the race. This one’s anybody’s ballgame.
