Deeper Minings: A Closer Look at Jets-Patriots

If Shonn Greene can run on the Patriots, can't your running back?

The game between the New England Patriots and New York Jets was frequently described as a matchup between a great offense and a great defense. Far less frequently does it get mentioned that it also pitted one of the league’s worst offenses against an atrocious defense. And that matchup was just as critical to the game. Since the Patriots won by a good margin, it was frequently noted that their defense was turning the corner. Not so fast. They were playing the hapless Jets. The supposedly opportunistic Pats forced no turnovers from Mark Sanchez and let Shonn Greene run free. (relatively)

Greene ran for 83 yards and a score on his 21 carries, easily his best game of the year. Fantasy owners should take not. Greene will produce decent totals against horrible defenses. Mark Sanchez threw two scores against New England but the 166 yards he put up against the Pats is as much of an indictment you will find in fantasy football.

One other side of the ball the Benjarvis Green-Ellis thrashed the Jets for 136 yards and two scores. Thrash may not be the best term. Rather, the Jets allowed him to run the ball day as they consolidated their efforts to stop the passing game. Unfortunately the Jets secondary performed poorly, allowing Tom Brady to throw for 321, Wes Welker to catch another century of yards and Deion Branch put in a good days work, with 74 yards and a score. Remarkably, it was Darrelle Revis who was frequently the victim of Welker’s long receptions. While the Pats receiving corps seems to be finding an identity, with Branch as the number two option, the Jets defense seems to be combusting. Plan accordingly.
