2012 Fantasy Football Preview – Part V: Backup Quarterbacks

Matt Moore is deserving of a roster spot on your 2012 fantasy team

We’ve already been through the top-12 quarterbacks for 2012. That means that in standard leagues, there are enough for everyone in your free fantasy football competition to have a solid starter. As I’ve often said, if you don’t pick one of the top six quarterbacks, you should try to get two in the 7-12 range. But if you only manage to snag one of them, there are still options left. All of the following sleeper quarterbacks should be available in late rounds. There will be more than enough options for you to get a second quarterback even in deeper leagues. For now, try a few playoff fantasy football games, and take a look at the guys who you will want to back-up your quarterback in 2012.TIER VI

14. Jay Cutler—Bears

Drafted 17th I said 10th Finished 22nd
Obviously Cutler’s numbers are skewed by missing much of the season. But since he got to Chicago, he has only improved. He has the potential to be a top-10 guy out of the late rounds.

15. Matt Moore—Dolphins
Undrafted Finished 23rd
Obviously, Moore was not the starter all year in Miami. If he enters 2012 as the starter, he will be a value pick. I’m high on the Dolphins in 2012 and Moore is the linchpin that makes that prediction work.

16. Kyle Orton—Chiefs
Drafted 18th I said 21st Finished DNF
I like Orton more with the Chiefs than I did with the Broncos. Throwing to Dwayne Bowe and Jonathan Baldwin will help his numbers, and they will be pleased to get the ball from the best qb to throw in KC since Trent Green.

20. Christian Ponder—Vikings
Undrafted Finished 26th
Obviously, this is a last resort, but Ponder showed some good things once he took the reigns in Minnesota.

UNKNOWN TIER

Peyton Manning—Colts
Andrew Luck—Stanford
Robert Griffin III—Baylor

Any of these guys that did not play a down this year could have substantial value, even in salary cap fantasy football, but until we know what situation they are walking into, they are unrankable. In Manning’s case, we will also want to find out the extent to which his injury will hamper his 2012 production. The possibilities range from fourth tier(third for Manning) to undraftable.

Ben Roethlisberger is an uneccessary risk.

AVERSION TIER

Next I will talk about few guys who I don’t like for 2012. Some are better than others but that they are alike in that they will probably never fall to the point where I would be willing to draft them.

13. Ben Roethlisberger—Steelers
Drafted 10th I said 13th Finished 11th
As of now, I am fading the Steelers next year. That means avoiding any of them. The Steelers defense is in decline and I believe they will miss the playoffs. Thus, I believe most drafts will find Big Ben being drafted before the point where I think he has value.

17. Ryan Fitzpatrick—Bills
Undrafted I said 18th Finished 12th
Fitzpatrick’s numbers were boosted by a strong early-season run that likely does not repeat. People will draft him based on his 12th place finish, but not me. In salary cap fantasy football, he may be valuable in the late-season, as his dollar price drops to a reasonable amount.

18. Mark Sanchez—Jets
Drafted 20th I said 21st  Finished 8th
I just don’t see Sanchez repeating his raw numbers. He should not be drafted in the top 15.

19. Andy Dalton—Bengals
Undrafted Finished 13th
Dalton should be ok, but his schedule will be tougher and he should be just short of useful in free fantasy football.

20. Josh Freeman—Bucs
Drafted 12th  I said 14th Finished 18th
I’m not seeing a big bounce back here. Not with this offense. Not on this team. Freeman will play better in 2012 than he did in 2011, but not by enough to make him a fantasy starter.

Tim Tebow—Broncos
Undrafted Finished 15th
I’ll keep this short. Tim Tebow probably shouldn’t be drafted at all. Even in weekly fantasy football, it is unsafe to play Tebow as he can be stuffed in an easy matchup, as easily as he can get garbage points against a good team.
