The state of quarterback play in the NFL is in a dire situation. Peyton Manning hasn’t played all year. Jay Cutler and Matt Schaub are down for the count. Michael Vick is still in fantasy limbo. Carson Palmer, Matt Hasselbeck and Alex Smith are all currently the best active quarterbacks in their respective divisions. In the midst of the carnage, one unhyped player has the tools to save your fantasy season. That player is Rex Grossman.
Against Seattle, Grossman put up respectable numbers: 314 yards with a pair of touchdowns and picks. The interceptions are something fantasy owners, and the Redskins, will have to live with. Grossman makes some bad decisions. But Grossman led many scoring drives downfield, even though two ended on a blocked field goal and an unfortunate redzone pick. And among the quarterbacks still in action, few sling it like Grossman does. He throws the ball downfield accurately, always looking to put it in the endzone.
Without figuring for opponent, Grossman has established himself as a top-12 option for your free fantasy football team. But if you stash him on the bench now, you will have him for attractive matchups against New England and the injury-plagued defense of the New York Giants. Against the Pats, Grossman is an enticing option even in salary cap fantasy football.
Grossman’s day allowed a few other Redskins to shine. Fred Davis, who is the only Redskin starting in most weekly fantasy football competitions, put up 58 yards and a score. Roy Helu broke the century mark for the first time, receiving the bulk of the carries(23) and rushing for 108. It was the first time he’d run for more than 41 since week 2. He added 7 receptions for an additional 54 yards. Against the Pats, or the Giants who were just shredded by New Orleans. Washington’s playoff run may be done, but between Grossman and Helu, they will be difference makers in the homestretch of the fantasy season.
For Seattle, there is much less for fantasy owners to love in what happened on Sunday. The Seahawk passing game was annihilated, much as it has been all season. Tavaris Jackson and the receiving corps are dead weight on your fantasy bench at this point.
The only player of consequence on this team is Marshawn Lynch. The 111-yard performance against Washington wasn’t as impressive as the 109 he put up against Baltimore or the 135 he hung on Dallas the week before that, but it was the fourth straight week he put up at least 88 and he’s scored three times in that span. If you have him, you might be tempted to start him even against the gamut of Chicago and San Francisco that awaits him in the fantasy playoffs. You may have to, but in salary cap fantasy football, it isn’t worth the risk.
